Montessori developed materials that would give the child the opportunity to be introduced to mathematical concepts in a more natural or concrete form.
During the time in Math, the child works with concrete objects representing mathematical concepts and gradually moves to internalization of mathematical ideas.

Pattern of Three
Each experience is designed around the "Pattern of Three." When we introduce the concept of quantity, we begin by using concrete objects. In stage two children are gradually introduced to the symbols representing each quantify. In stage three the child associates the concrete quantity with the abstract symbol.

The math area is subdivided into six categories. The six basic categories include the following:
1. Numbers 1-10
2. The decimal system
3. Linear counting
4. Memorization
5. The passage to abstraction.
6. Fractions
The area of Math is usually the area that the child will explore last. It involves great concentration and allows for the child to further his knowledge from the previous years. Math lessons usually begin around age four. There are many previous lessons that have prepared the child for this journey. The child will come to learn the abstract form of math free from the math anxiety that many of us have experienced.
