Sensorial

Through experiences in the Prepared Environment, the child becomes aware of his senses and is able to refine his senses using the various Sensorial materials.

The child is able to discover relationships and compare the objects he is using. Through this work, he orders and classifies his impressions and forms logical concepts such as longest and shortest.

The child finds that not only can impressions be ordered into categories but names can also be given to these impressions. He can describe his impressions, and through work in the Sensorial area, the child learns to observe, choose, make judgments, and compare .

The Montessori materials enable the child to clarify his impressions and order his acquisitions so that they offer the child the key to the greater world outside the walls of the Montessori Prepared Environment.

These materials meet the Sensitive Period and developmental needs of the child.

The area of Sensorial is organized around the senses of touch, smell, taste, sight and hearing. The child will work to recognize which sensation is invovled in each lesson and gradually comes to an abstract understanding of the materials' discernable qualities.
